Nascent Constellation

stories of kindness and grace

An excerpt from "What Time is High Tide?"
part one of Nascent Constellation

I was in Earthfood, Provincetown's first health food store. Earthfood was right across from the Post Office in one the little shops that flank the entrance to the New Art Cinema, where now there is a children’s clothing store.

Nearly every day my best friend Bernie and I would walk into town and meet at Earthfood, sometimes to buy groceries, sometimes just to visit. Bernie wasn’t there yet, but our friend Janet (Janet Planet) was working behind the counter and she and I were chatting.

A woman came in with her two kids. I would guess the kids were aged 7 and 9. The woman bought some snacks for the kids and as she was about to go out the door, she turned and asked, “what time is high tide?” My friend Janet, perhaps the wiser one, said she didn’t know. Another regular, Paula, was there in the corner near the front of the store breast feeding her new baby, Sirus. She looked at me and shook her head, she didn’t want to get into the conversation.

I'll put more excerpts in the coming months. Enjoy the essay on John F. Kennedy, Jr on this page. Originally published on Provincetowndaily.com and in the first printing of Nascent Constellation, it is back online.

Thanks for reading.
